По-моему, до такого даже доктор Хауз еще не доходил:

it all sounds a bit weird if you're accustomed to American healthcare and private medical practice

Forgot to ask you - did you go on your West Coast business trip? or going to?

Yes, we have lots of bureaucracy in the health care system.

I went and come back, in July. Didn't see much, but liked what I've seen. Do you have your London trip sorted? Do you know where and when you are staying?

In your house, of course!
[don't faint: not ALL the time] I'll write to you tonight, OK?

There is lots of bureacracy here, too, between doctor's offices and insurance companies, but there is something strange in wanting an approval of NHS, the same organization doctor is working in, for a vital machine with excellent marketing potential - why not just go to an independent manufacturer and produce it? And then pocket persentage from sales to the hospitals everywhere?
I have no particular knowledge of American system, but I would imagine a device like this, which was already tested positively on humans, will have no problems being approved by FDA (or whatever government body gives licences to medical equipment).
