OK, maybe they took his words out of the context. OK, maybe he is under such stress that you can't expect him to think clearly.
But still it looks very much like her father is not quite sane.

But they are also afraid an "overdose" of morphine could hasten her death.

"She's alive and she's fighting like hell to live," Mrs Schiavo's father, Bob Schindler said after visiting his daughter.

Is "afraid" an emotion that comes to mind in this situation?

It does, unless you can imagine a father who's eager to have his daughter murdered in cold blood.

Well, he has lost the court fight to keep her alive. She is being slowly murdered right now (from his point of view anyway). Would not it be more natural to wish for a speedy and painless death under the circumstances? Especially if he believes she is not braindead at the moment.

Somehow I just don't see how losing a court fight migh suddenly make him wish to see them delivering the killing blow or whatever. Frankly, the whole idea of some court deciding for a "speedy and painless" (or the slow and lingering, which is the case here) death for someone who isn't even on life support and shows signs of awareness (not to mention - against the wishes of the family) makes me sick. What's next, gassing the mentally ill? Btw, she certainly wasn't braindead:

Oh, but what's the use...

Oh, I'm not arguing that between life and "death by court", the life is a better choice. That much is obvious. But this is not an issue now, is it?

Well, getting back to your original question, there is such a thing as hope. Personally, I don't put much stock into the concept, but you can't blame a guy for hoping till the last minute for some devine miracle or new court rule, whichever may come first. Suffering is still being alive, dead is dead.
