OK, maybe they took his words out of the context. OK, maybe he is under such stress that you can't expect him to think clearly.
But still it looks very much like her father is not quite sane.

But they are also afraid an "overdose" of morphine could hasten her death.

"She's alive and she's fighting like hell to live," Mrs Schiavo's father, Bob Schindler said after visiting his daughter.


Is "afraid" an emotion that comes to mind in this situation?

Well, getting back to your original question, there is such a thing as hope. Personally, I don't put much stock into the concept, but you can't blame a guy for hoping till the last minute for some devine miracle or new court rule, whichever may come first. Suffering is still being alive, dead is dead.
