2) Did you need these 17-century original works?
-I wanted them.
-That a difference between "need" and "want"
- Not for me!

So, do you believe that my greatest masterpiece is already done, and I'll burn down at the tender age of 26?
-All stars do burn down, it's the flame that counts!
- To the flame, then!

"Citizen Kane" (1939)

Date: 2004-10-04 08:14 am (UTC)I read in an interview of Edward Blake, I think, about shooting the first Pink Panther movie. Which was supposed to be a vehicle for the hero, played by David Niven. The director was amazed by Niven's reaction to being acted off screen by Sellers, and the movie's whole focus shifting to Sellers.
But then again, Niven was not only a professional actor but also a perfect gentleman.

Date: 2004-10-04 09:55 am (UTC)S- We'll have to disagree on that. One's professional skills are seen on the screen (stage, pitch etc)and they have nothing to do with one's self-evaluation or behavior. Just like Francesco Totti may be an uncouth, half-illiterate block AND a great football-player, it's possible to be a pathetic person, a lousy director (or even performer of certain parts like Robin Hood) AND an acting genius -within one's scope. I have no means to judge about the former, but I have seen the latter with my own eyes. It's easier to adore a gentleman, but it doesn't take one to be a God-inspired actor.

Date: 2004-10-04 03:04 pm (UTC)You can be a really rotten person off screen, but not let it influence the movie you are making, I'm not talking about that. But when it distracts from the movie, I count it as a lack of professionalism.

Date: 2004-10-04 11:16 pm (UTC)S- Probably, the best way to sum it up. One's negative personality shouldn't be allowed to hurt the quality of hir job. That would be characteristic of bad professionals- in any area of activity. I am not sure if you have actually seen those movies I mentioned (including "Untouchables"), but believe me, KK's
performance in all of them was quite outstanding. That means he has it in him. I wouldn't pass a judgement on his directing abilities or even those acting attempts I haven't seen (like Robin Hood) but even if he doesn't always do justice to his enormous talent, it can't detract from his actual potential already proven more than once, so to say. That's why I believe that within his scope, he is a genius. Taking into consideration your factual correction, I would compromise on an
INCONSISTENT GENIUS :-)
